The Wildlife Map of the Hebrides

37. South Coast of Uist

There are excellent views of Barra, Eriskay and the sound of Eriskay from this coast. The small passenger ferry from Ludag to Eoligarry crosses water not far from where the ill-fated SS. Politician, which inspired the book by Sir Compton Mackenzie, went down in 1941. Near the Pollachar Inn is one of the few large shingle beaches in the Western Isles, above which is an ancient standing stone. Bottle nosed dolphins are often seen in the Sound even in winter.
