The Wildlife Map of the Hebrides
28. Lochmaddy Area and Loch an Duin
Seen from the air, the whole area is an intricate pattern of inlets, lochs and channels, with many islands and skerries in the sea loch. On this drowned coastline, sea water flows into many of the islands 'inland' lochs (including Loch an Duin) at high tide. This is an important area for otters with many holts by the sheltered seashore. Common seals feed in the coastal waters and use some of the islands for basking or breeding. Waders, wildfowl and birds of prey some of which are of national importance, nest or over winter in the area. Self guided walks (with accompanying leaflets) are laid out around Lochmaddy village itself and from the prehistoric burial cairn at Langass near the main road 5 miles to the west of the village.
