The Wildlife Map of the Hebrides
38. Eriskay
The residents of this island, now joined to South Uist by causeway, are largely dependent on fishing. Besides the wreck of the SS. Politician, Eriskay's many other claims to fame are its unique ponies and being the very place that Bonnie Prince Charlie first set foot on British soil. Here sea convolvulus is found, known as the 'Princes Flower', tradition has it that the seeds fell from the Princes pocket as he stepped ashore in 1745. Local schoolchildren have erected a cairn at the spot. There is a self-guided walk around the island and further information is available in www.WalkHebrides.com
