Drudibeg

The Wildlife Map of the Hebrides

33. Loch Druidibeg

The area around Loch Druidibeg is a National Nature Reserve managed by Scottish Natural Heritage with many different habitats including freshwater, brackish lagoon, dune, machair, peatland and scrub woodland. The loch itself is shallow but very large, with many islands, some of which have a cover of native scrub: one of these is home to a resident colony of herons. The greylag geese which breed around the Loch contribute to the resident population that remain in the Uists all year. Birds of prey hunting in the reserve include golden eagle, hen harriers, kestrel, peregrine and Merlin. A small plantation attracts woodland birds, one of the features described in a leaflet to accompany the self guided walk. There is a full colour leaflet available from SNH describing the whole reserve.
