The Wildlife Map of the Hebrides
15. Camus Uig
This large bay is ringed by a number of sand covered rocky knolls, a fine machair and several saltmarshes. The famous Lewis chessmen were found in the dunes here in 1830. The sand quarries near Carnish were deposited on the bed of the same glacier meltwater river which formed Gleann Miavig. The access from the Ardroil shore road is more convenient than that from Crowlista. Carnish beach cannot be reached by car but the views from here repay the short walk from the road end (please park with care.)
