The Wildlife Map of the Hebrides
11. Calanais (Callanish)
This internationally important archaeological site was excavated from the peat by Sir James Matheson in 1851, who is said to have removed a depth of 1.5metres (5 feet) illustrating the rate of peat growth over the 4000 years or so since the stones were erected. Pollen studies have revealed that there was extensive birch scrub or woodland here before the start of the peat growth. The ridge beyond the stones offers fine views of Great Bernera and the currents in the Straits. Much more detailed information on the history and wildlife of the area is available in the Calanais Visitor Centre.
