The Wildlife Map of the Hebrides
32. Ardivacher and Loch Bee
Ardivacher (height of the Machair) Point is composed of the oldest known rocks in Britain, over 3000 million years old. Twenty miles of beach stretch from the headland to the southern tip of South Uist., broken only by Rubha Ardvule. Visitors should be aware to encountering pieces of rocket on the beach from the nearby Royal Artillery range. Please look out for flags warning that the range is active. Loch Bee is a huge Brackish (mixed salt and fresh water) loch connected to both the Atlantic and (by a flood-gate) to the Minch. It is fairly shallow and contains a range of species limited to brackish waters. The views from the causeway is enhanced by up to 300 resident mute swans, with additional flocks of whooper swans in winter.
