The Wildlife Map of the Hebrides

36. Rubha Ardvule

Rubha Ardvule is one of the few rocky headlands of any size on the west coast of South Uist. Many seabirds can be seen in the area including a small tern colony. This is a good spot for watching seabirds offshore, whilst Loch Ardvule has mute swans and a variety of ducks. The Broch, originally an island in the middle of the loch, has been excavated by Sheffield University. The Vikings are believed to have built a canal from the sea into Loch Ardvule where they sheltered their boats. Purple loosestrife, a scarce plant in the Western Isles, is found on the headland. Please look out for flags warning that the Royal Artillery range is active.
