The Jewels of the Hebrides

The Hebrides are renowned for their biological and ecological significance and have been honoured with many designations which seek to protect this rare and fragile wilderness. Here is a quick run down of some of the main nature conservation areas in the Hebrides.

Browse through the conservation areas by clicking on the menu to the right.

There are a host of further designations, which are too numerous to go into detail over, including:

  • One World Heritage Site (St Kilda)
  • Four NNRs (National Nature Reserves)
  • 53 SSSI's (Sites of Special Scientific Interest)
  • 15 SPA's (Special Protection Areas)
  • Three NSA's (National Scenic Areas)
  • 11 SAC's (Special Areas of Conservation)

For further information go to the Scottish Natural Heritage Website (www.snh.org.uk).
